CENTURY BUILDING HISTORY
Constructed in 1901, the Century Building was designed by the prominent local architect Rubush & Hunter. This architectural firm was renowned for its contributions to the cityscape, shaping many of Indianapolis’s iconic structures during the early 20th century. The building’s design reflected the prevailing architectural style of the time, featuring elements of Beaux-Arts and Neoclassical design.

Originally, the Century Building served as a prestigious office space, housing various businesses and professional firms. Its prime location in the heart of downtown Indianapolis made it an ideal hub for commerce and business activities.

As Indianapolis continued to grow and urbanize throughout the mid-20th century, the Century Building remained a prominent fixture on the city skyline. However, like many historic buildings, it faced challenges in the latter part of the century as urban renewal projects and changing architectural tastes threatened its preservation.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, there was a renewed interest in preserving and revitalizing historic buildings in downtown Indianapolis. The Century Building underwent renovations and adaptive reuse projects to modernize its infrastructure while preserving its architectural integrity. These efforts breathed new life into the building, attracting a mix of businesses, restaurants, and residential spaces. Today, the Century Building stands as a symbol of Indianapolis’s commitment to preserving its architectural heritage while embracing modernization. It serves as a vibrant hub in the downtown area, contributing to the city’s cultural and economic vitality. Its rich history and timeless elegance continue to captivate residents and visitors alike, reminding them of the enduring legacy of Indianapolis’s past and the possibility of the future.
